As the world teeters on the brink of destruction, Dietrich Bonhoeffer joins a deadly plot to assassinate Hitler, risking his faith and destiny to save millions of Jews from genocide. Niemoller actor August Diehl previously played an SS Gestapo officer in Inglourious Basterds (2009) and a German citizen who resists enlisting in the German army in A Hidden Life (2019). Dietrich Bonhoeffer: We have no defense against stupidity. Neither protests nor force can touch it. Reasoning is useless. Facts which conflict with personal prejudices may simply be believed—indeed, a fool may oppose them by criticizing them, and if they are indisputable they may be dismissed only as trivial exceptions. Well portrayed and acted. However, the film spends an inordinate amount of time on Bonhoeffer’s 1930 trip. to New York and his alleged fascination with gospel music and jazz. Indeed, his later prison letters reveal the lasting influence of Paul Gerhardt’s traditional Lutheran hymns and hymns on his theology and piety. He does not mention anything about his engagement to Maria von Wedemeyer (eighteen years his junior), with whom he exchanged dozens of letters during his imprisonment (1943-1945) and later published under the name « Love Letters from Cell 92 » . & #39; Maria’s grandmother financed the seminary of the Confessing Church in Finkenwalde, where Bonhoeffer advocated a kind of « new monasticism »; for seminarians – with traditional chants and the prescribed prayer of the psalms. The plot that weaved the end of Marian Bonhoeffer’s life would raise compelling questions like: Why get engaged if your world is about to end? After all this, it is good that a film was made about Bonhoeffer, which brings his story of struggle for truth to a wider audience.
